A Wocket In My Pocket

This is an example of a fun lesson we had the other day. We read one of our favorite books, There is a Wocket in my Pocket by Dr. Suess. This book uses rhyming and encourages kids to replace the first letter of a word to make a new silly word. The biggest indicator of future reading success, after reading to your children, is phonemic awareness (the awareness that words are made up of sounds). One major exersize that develops phonemic awareness is replacing a sound in a word. So after we read the book we made our own "wockets" and placed them in different places around the room creating new creatures. We had a gair on the chair, and a mouch on the couch, a loor on the floor. The students eventually joined in creating their own silly words, not even noticing that they were developing this new skill. We were just playing a fun game. This is the way children learn at Discovery Learning Home Preschool.
